Valentine's Day: between tradition and modernity

The origins of Valentine's Day: a mix of stories and legends

The origins of Valentine's Day are multiple and lost between history and legend. Several theories coexist:

  • Lupercalia: In ancient Rome, Lupercalia was a pagan festival celebrated in mid-February in honor of the god Lupercus, protector of livestock and fertility. These festivities, marked by rituals of purification and fertility, could be one of the roots of Valentine's Day.
  • Saint Valentine of Terni or Rome: In the 3rd century, under the Roman Empire, several saints bearing the name Valentine were persecuted and executed. The most widespread legend tells the story of a priest, Valentine of Terni or Rome, who secretly married Christian couples, thus defying the ban of Emperor Claudius II. The latter, wishing to have single soldiers more inclined to war, had prohibited marriages. Valentine, symbol of love and fidelity, was martyred and subsequently became the patron saint of lovers.
  • The association with courtly love: In the Middle Ages, the tradition of Valentine's Day would have been strengthened thanks to the influence of courtly love. Poets and troubadours helped popularize the idea that February 14 was the day when birds mated, symbolizing the start of the mating season.

It was in the 14th century in England that the association between Valentine's Day and romantic love became more pronounced. The poet Geoffrey Chaucer mentions Valentine's Day in his writings, reinforcing the idea of a holiday dedicated to lovers.

Why celebrate Valentine's Day today?

If the origins of Valentine's Day are ancient, its celebration still continues today. Beyond the often criticized commercial aspect, Valentine's Day can be an opportunity to:

Express your love: In a daily life often punctuated by routine, Valentine's Day offers a special time to show your affection to your other half. It is an opportunity to remind others of the importance he/she has in our lives.

Strengthen bonds: Sharing a special moment, exchanging gifts or simply spending time together helps consolidate the relationship and rekindle the flame.

Celebrate love in all its forms: Beyond romantic love, Valentine's Day can also be an opportunity to celebrate friendship, family love or self-love.

Create memories: Whether it's a romantic dinner, a cultural outing or a simple evening of pampering, Valentine's Day allows you to create precious memories and share moments of happiness.

What gifts to give for Valentine's Day?

Choosing a Valentine's Day gift is often a headache. The important thing is to choose a gift that matches the personality of your loved one and the nature of your relationship. Here are some ideas:

  • Classics revisited: Flowers, chocolates and jewelry remain safe values, but can be personalized for more originality. A bouquet of rare flowers, artisanal chocolates or an engraved piece of jewelry are all ways to make these gifts more personal.
  • Experiences: Giving an experience is a great way to create shared memories. A dinner in a gourmet restaurant, a romantic weekend, a concert, a show or a sporting activity are all options to consider.
  • Personalized gifts: A photo album, an engraved object, an embroidered garment or a handmade gift demonstrate special attention and personal investment.
  • Intangible gifts: Offering your time, your help or your listening can be the most beautiful gift. Preparing a meal, organizing a surprise evening, writing a love letter or simply spending quality time together are simple but touching gestures.

Valentine's Day, beyond its commercial aspect, is above all a celebration which celebrates love and affection. Whether you choose to follow traditions or favor originality, the important thing is to show your feelings and share a special moment with the people you love. The ideal gift is one that comes from the heart and reflects the uniqueness of the relationship.
